Babbidge Library Resources in European Studies cover all of Europe
in English language monographs and journals. Our holdings are strongest
on modern Austria, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. We collect
works on the history, literature, politics, economics and social
structure of these countries in German, French, Italian, and Spanish
as well as English. While we give priority to the collection of
imaginative literature in the original language, English translations
are widely acquired as well. Aside from a small number of journals,
the library no longer actively collects Russian language material.
Approximately 250 English language titles in Russian studies are
acquired each year.
The library emphasizes the acquisition of scholarly works that
support teaching and research. Users seeking to follow current events
in Europe will be best served by following the links provided by
the key Western and Eastern European web sites you can find on our
subject web page for European Studies www.lib.uconn.edu/subjectareas/europe.htm.
The three European language newspapers we collect are acquired on
microfilm for the support of historical research on contemporary
France, Germany and Italy.
Overall collections are strongest in history and literature, where
collecting is largely based on authorial reputation. Current topical
emphases include French and Italian film, East Germany, the radical
right, immigration and migration across Europe and the challenges
to national identity posed by both immigrant populations and the
European Union. Videos are housed in the Culpeper Library on the
third floor of Babbidge, but relevant titles are best located in
HOMER homerweb.lib.uconn.edu by using the format and language limits.
The Thomas J. Dodd Research Center houses distinguished collections
on the Italian Risorgimento, the Belgian Revolution of 1830, French
Political Pamphlets 1775-1840 and French satirical periodicals 1850-1910.
Requests for research assistance with, or the acquisition of, European
